Ultimate 1-Month Vietnam Itinerary: Best South to North Backpacking Route

Check out my Vietnam Travel Advice blog for everything that you need to know before planning a trip to Vietnam – it includes important information you need to know about the country, how to get around, useful apps, money saving tips and much more.
Vietnam is a vast country with endless affordable activities. To truly experience its rich offerings, it’s best to take your time exploring. While it’s possible to travel from South to North in four weeks, the journey can be customized based on the time you have available:
- 4 weeks: South to North
- 3 weeks: North & Central
- 1-2 weeks: North only
This blog will provide you with the perfect 1-month itinerary from the bustling cities in the south to the serene landscapes in the north. You can save money by doing many activities and attractions by yourself, however if you prefer to play it safe for convenience, then I recommend booking tours so everything is organised for you. I recommend GetYourGuide for tours and Klook for purchasing tickets to attractions. I will also be including a price estimation on everything where possible – price listed is in AUD.
~1 AUD = 0.65 USD = 16,500 VND.

Alternative Cities In Vietnam
Some of the cities mentioned above may not suit everyone’s preferences. However, there are four other amazing cities that are definitely worth considering if you have the time. Each offers unique attractions and experiences, making them great additions to your itinerary.
Phu Quoc (4 nights)
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is located in the south of the country. Often referred to as the “Europe/Greece/Bali” of Vietnam, it boasts an endless coastline of white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs. The island’s town area features modern amenities and infrastructure, offering a stark contrast to rural Vietnam. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including water sports, snorkeling, and diving in the An Thoi Archipelago. The island is also home to Phu Quoc National Park, which covers more than half of the island and offers hiking trails through lush tropical forests. Additionally, Phu Quoc is famous for its fish sauce production and pepper farms, which are interesting to visit. The night markets in Duong Dong town are a must-see, where you can savor fresh seafood and shop for local handicrafts.

Mui Ne (1 night)
Mui Ne, located along the southeastern coast of Vietnam, is renowned for its picturesque sand dunes and beautiful beaches. The Red Sand Dunes and White Sand Dunes are popular attractions, offering stunning views and activities like sandboarding and quad biking. Mui Ne is also famous for its unique microclimate, which makes it one of the best places in Vietnam for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Nha Trang (2 nights)
Nha Trang, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant seafood scene, is a perfect destination for island hopping, diving, and enjoying sunsets by the shore. Besides its beautiful coastline, Nha Trang offers unique wellness experiences with therapeutic mud baths and hot mineral water baths. Cultural attractions like the Po Nagar Cham Towers and Long Son Pagoda add a historical touch, while Vinpearl Land amusement park provides family-friendly fun. This coastal city has something for everyone, from relaxation to adventure and cultural exploration.

Cat Ba Island OR Ha Long Bay (2 nights)
Located in Northern Vietnam near the Chinese border, Ha Long Bay is famed for its over 1,600 limestone islands rising from emerald waters, creating a surreal and cinematic landscape. However, due to increasing over-tourism, Ha Long Bay has earned a reputation as a ‘tourist trap.’ For a more serene and less crowded experience, consider Cat Ba Island and Lan Ha Bay, which offer equally stunning scenery and a more tranquil atmosphere. Cat Ba Island, part of the Ha Long Bay region, features dramatic coastlines, lush jungles, and striking limestone karsts. It provides options for day trips or overnight cruises to suit various budgets and activities like local fishing, hiking, and savoring fresh seafood, offering both relaxation and adventure while avoiding the crowds of Ha Long Bay.

Cao Bang (2 nights)
Cao Bang is home to the stunning Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. Known for its dramatic landscapes, Cao Bang boasts five major river systems and 47 lakes, with water playing a vital role in shaping its scenery. Mama’s Homestay offers a 6D5N Ha Giang loop tour that includes a stop in Cao Bang, allowing you to explore this picturesque region.
